The Crown Chakra is the seat of cosmic consciousness and enlightenment. The element of this chakra is thought. Located at top of the head, it correlates with the cerebral cortex. Because of its location, the crown chakra is closely associated with the brain and the whole nervous system.

The crown chakra relates to what we experience as the mind, especially the awareness that makes use of the mind. Through watching our thoughts, our mind assimilates experience into meaning and constructs our belief systems. These beliefs are the master programs from which we construct our reality. Our belief systems are comprised of various bits of meaning we have derived from our experience.

At this level, we attempt to understand and experience consciousness— who is the witness of our mind? What is our purpose? Creating and searching for meaning in our lives.

Emotional & Behavioral characteristics

The crown chakra is associated with the following emotional and behavioral characteristics:

  • Consciousness
  • Clear sense of purpose in life
  • Awareness of higher consciousness, wisdom, of what is sacred
  • Belief that I can influence events in my life
  • Realization, liberation from limiting patterns
  • Ecstasy, bliss
  • Conviction that the heavens direct my life
  • Belief that things happen the way they should

Crown chakra imbalance

When the Crown chakra has an imbalance, it can manifest as:

  • Being disconnected from spirit, constant cynicism regarding what is sacred
  • Unsure sense of purpose in life
  • Mental fog/ Confusion
  • On the opposite side, an overactive crown could manifest as a disconnection with the body
  • Living in your head, being disconnected from your body and earthly matters

Balancing the chakra

  • To nourish the crown chakra, you need to display gratitude for your life and world around you
  • Meditate daily– start with just 5 minutes a day and work your way up to longer times
  • Accept the uncertainty of some elements of your purpose
  • Try mantras: “I cherish my spirit. I seek experiences that nourish my spirit. I listen to the wisdom of universe”
  • Practice observation of your thoughts. Don’t believe or attach to them. You are NOT your thoughts.
  • Clean and simplify your surroundings, by dong so you’re also creating the same kind of purification within
  • Use crystals like amethyst or selenite for clearing and balancing
